As a public service the Dallas Genealogical Society maintains a searchable database of materials recently acquired by the Dallas Public Library. See the Dallas Public Library link in the Resources menu.
The Federation of Genealogical Societies, the National Archives, and the genealogical community have started a project to digitize the War of 1812 pension files—a fitting beginning to the bicentennial commemoration of this important war. This initiative seeks to raise $3.7 million. Preserve the Pensions! seeks to raise the bulk of the funds before the bicentennial of the start of the war and finish digitization before the bicentennial of the war's end in 2015. With 7.2 million images in 180,000 files, there is much digitization to do. See the FGS Web Site for more information.
Proposed ByLaw Changes
The DGS Board announces proposed bylaw changes primarily concerning the return to a September-August operating year. After several committee meetings and consultations with the Board, the Bylaws Committee, which was made up of Jean Larson (chair), Sandra Crowley, and Jan Howell (all present or past members of the DGS Board) submitted these changes to the Board at its June 5, 2010 meeting where they were approved.
Hopefully you have noticed that we have added a Google map of all the Dallas county cemeteries and columbariums we could find from seven or so sources (check out the map and look the entries for Dallas county cemeteries near you).
